Full View Pro Indie Film Set

Welcome to Full View Film Appreciation, a space where we talk all things TV, Film, Media, Gaming and more. From reviewing and classics to analyzing and putting innovations to the test. This week, Full View's Production Manager and seasoned industry vet Mike Sears dives into Detroit’s rising indie film scene and how it’s becoming a hub for innovation.

Detroit may not have the studio dominance of LA or the tax incentives of Georgia, but it has something arguably more valuable—undeniable storytelling power. Independent filmmakers here are proving that with passion, ingenuity, and the right production partners, world-class content can be made anywhere.

At Full View Productions, our team not only understands the importance of compelling storytelling, we uphold it. Whether it's branded content, scripted narratives, or unscripted documentaries, we’re ready to bring any story to life— and have!

The Future of Detroit’s Independent Film Market

Full View Productions' Production Manager Mike Sears, has over 20 years in the entertainment industry. When Michigan first rolled out the Michigan Film and Digital Media Incentive, he witnessed first hand how it put Detroit on Hollywood's radar, attracting filmmakers eager to stretch their budgets while tapping into the city’s gritty, cinematic aesthetic. With more productions pouring in, the city experienced an unprecedented surge in film projects, talent agencies, and stage productions. Independent filmmakers found new opportunities in both acting and behind-the-scenes roles.

We've been proud to collaborate with talented local Directors' like Arthur Cartwright on the short film Derrick (2022), contributing to the city’s growing catalog of indie projects. Our post-production work on the documentary series You Can’t Erase Me further reflects our dedication to filmmaking and bringing important narratives to life. These projects, along with many others emerging from the city, highlight the resilience and talent within Detroit’s indie film community.

Detroit: More Than Just a Backdrop

Though Michigan’s film incentive ended a few years late, Detroit’s independent film scene refused to fade. Today, the city’s creatives, driven by passion and resilience, found ways to keep the momentum going. Despite lacking the financial incentives of LA or Atlanta, Detroit has become a proving ground for filmmakers unafraid to push boundaries.

Streaming platforms and digital distribution have further fueled this movement. Services like Tubi have created new avenues for indie projects to reach global audiences. Local filmmakers are taking full advantage, producing high-quality work that stands toe-to-toe with mainstream productions.
