Spike Lee Dolly Malcolm X BTS

If you’ve seen Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, or BlacKkKlansman, you’ve experienced the dreamlike, almost surreal sensation of a Spike Lee dolly shot. Unlike traditional dolly moves that track with a subject, Lee’s technique places the actor and the camera on the same dolly, creating a gliding, almost weightless effect. This method heightens emotional moments, making characters feel detached from reality or drawing viewers deeper into their perspective. It’s a signature move that has found its way into commercials, music videos, and branded content, adding a unique, cinematic flair.

As part of our Innovative Illumination series—a hands-on initiative where our team hones creative skills and explores fresh ideas— we took a deep dive into this iconic filmmaking technique. Innovative Illumination is about staying fresh, pushing ourselves, and celebrating the art of storytelling. Whether we’re reinterpreting a classic film technique or exploring new technology, our goal is to stay at the forefront of creative production.

We dissected what makes Lee’s shot so powerful, experimenting with speed and positioning, and made adjustments to match the energy Lee injects into his work. See our recreation below.

Want to know how we pulled it off? Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes footage and let’s keep pushing the boundaries of storytelling together.
